Last Class... WOW!!

Today was the last day of class. It has been one heck of a semester. I started this class with minimum knowledge of technology and web 2.0 tools. Today, I have learned how to blog, screencast my voice over presentations, use smart board lessons, create creative and interactive presentations. I was even lucky enough to learn to make an original Mobile App!! All of these things I would have never thought I could achieve and here on the last class I have done all of these things and I have done them well.  Our last blog of the semester is a video blog. This is the first video blog I have ever created and I personally hate hearing myself speak on video. But to finish off the course with a bang I decided to give it a try. It has been a great semester and I have learned not only a lot about myself but also a lot about my team members and classmates as a whole. All in all, as stressed out as the semester was for me, things are finally going smoother and things are settling down and I couldn't be more proud and happy. MIssion Impossible... The search is on!

digital footprint is the trail of data that is left behind by users on digital services. This week we used Google search to find our own personal Digital footprint. Your digital footprint is everything on the internet that is about you. This could include:
  • a profile on Facebook or MySpace
  • photographs that you, your friends or family have posted online
  • anything you have written or that has been written about you, for instance on discussion boards, blogs, or in articles.
We are all being encouraged to put aspects of ourselves and our lives online, and much of this content is freely available to view. Each time we add something about ourselves on the internet we enlarge our own digital footprint. Whenever we mention someone else, we enlarge theirs. Personal information is routinely collected by companies eager to market their goods or services and this can be retained for several years. Equally, your digital presence can be monitored by individuals looking for information about you. You should first check what others can see about you. 

I completed a digital footprint of myself. I started with a search for my name using Google to see what information already exists on the web.  I created a video of what I found in my search. It is recommended to repeat the search regularly using services such as Google Alerts which give automatic updates. Although you may not have added anything new, your friends and family might have.

If you use social networking sites such as Facebook, or regularly post photos, videos, blogs and comments, make sure to manage your contributions carefully, since much of the information stored online becomes public by default. Unless you change your privacy settings, your social network page will come up on a web search. Anyone who finds out enough about you could potentially impersonate you, so be careful about the personal information you make publicly available. Potential employers have also been known to reject applicants on the basis of information discovered online.

Oh Sweet website of mine!

This week we learned all about developing a personal Professional website. I have worked with websites in the past for a teaching position I held. I was to create a photo album weekly and write posts for parents to keep updated on what we were doing in the classrooms. I found it amazing how easy it was to keep everyone connected all in one space. Everything was linked to my email accounts and the school number where parents could reach me. There was always a line of communication open at all times and I felt that was important as an educator.  While I worked on my website I decided to take a few snapshots to show how I created mine.

First page is the home page. I kept the image of the children because I am a teacher. Children are my life and without them I would not have a job or a career. When I have my own classroom I would have actual pictures of my students on the webpage for parents to see what a day in the life of a student in whatever grade they are.

The next picture is the view of the webpage as a mobile view. I never thought about having the website on the mobile devices but with todays society the mobile devices are used more than the computers.

The following pages are ones that explain my favorite technology sites that I have used this semester. I would use these sites in my classroom and I would alter the web pages to display student work that is completed by using those websites. I think it is important for student work to be displayed so they are using a real audience: their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc.

The last two pictures that I took have the professional organizations that I am involved in. If this was used for my classroom, I would have the links to different events or groups like chorus and band that students are involved in. I would put any important links in the same category that they correspond with. I also have all the projects that I completed with the course for the semester. I would have the students upload their papers to a wiki for them to read and add their work to as the assignments are completed. 

OH NO 2.0!!

Web 2.0 is how todays students are learning. WEB 2.0 tools allow students to have access to more up-to-date ways of accomplishing tasks such as creating, evaluating, analyzing, applying, understanding, and remembering. Web 2.0 tools are also what students are more engaged in to complete the tasks at hand rather than old ways such as writing an essay, creating a poster, etc. 

During our group work this week we focused on social medias and what they consisted of. Our group, Technical Knockouts created a google doc of Social Medias that allow online bookmarking as well as collaboration.   Here is the link to our Web 2.0 assignment. 


We live in a global, knowledge-based economy. According to the Common Core State Standards, students must master vital 21st century skills so they will be college and career ready 

Students must be able to -
• Communicate effectively,
• Collaborate with others,
• Think creatively and critically and,
• Gather, analyze, and synthesize information.
Technology, media literacy skills, and technical skills are integrated throughout the Common Core State Standards. Many Web 2.0 tools support these standards.

There are many websites that teachers can use both in and out of the classroom. One of my favorite sites to use personally is Pinterest. The idea of creating boards around a common theme allows for many creative expressions to take place. Oh Wiki You're so Fine

 As I read and examined the articles, I originally had no idea why they were referring to Wikipedia as part of the wikis. As a digital Immigrant, I did not realize that Wikipedia was a wiki-based encyclopedia.  A wiki is a website that allows everyone to participate in the creation of the site. You can create or edit anything that is on the sites contents. Wikis are continuously under revisions as things are always changing and modifying within the world. The worlds largest and most famous wiki is Wikipedia, which is a collaboration of contributors and editors from online. Anyone can use a wiki and they are very simple to use. People use them for collaborations on projects, while educators like us, would use them to conduct or follow up on courses or developments. It can also be used as a way of communication with parents who have Internet access.  Wikis and blogs may seem similar but they are very different. Blogs are where people “post” and “comment” on each others things. However, unlike the wiki, only the author of that post or comment can edit it. A wiki allows anyone the ability to change and modify the information that is posted or modified.

            What are the benefits from using a wiki within your school or classroom?  Some of the benefits include :
  • Connections that students make between new knowledge and old knowledge.
  • Allows for creativity and allows students to accept the idea of others being able to edit your work.  By teaching this skill, it allows for more collaboration and group projects rather than just individual ones to take place. 
  • It emphasizes the ideas that creativity pieces are never truly complete. There is always more to add or edit as time goes on.
  • Increases involvement and allows everyone to take an active role rather than “wait for their turn” mentality.
  • Develops teamwork skills that help them not only in schools but in life as a whole.
  • Improves and works with the writing process on an everyday basis in a more interactive and fun way for students. The revision phase that most students have a hard time with especially.

Now that we discussed what a wiki was and what the benefits could be, there was another term that was tossed around a lot within the articles as a whole.  The  term is Wikibookian. A wikibookian is a user of the wikibooks project. Not being too sure of the whole wiki thing in the first place, I was curious how one became a wikibookian and to my surprise anyone can become one. Everyone has a voice and can state their opinions on a topic as long as it is backed up with research. One of the articles did research based on wikibookians and their statuses. They figured out who they were in terms of age, gender, backgrounds etc.  There were many graphs and charts to show us what population makes up majority of the wikibookian community. Education, Blogging and Podcasting OH MY!!

This week's lesson was on blogging and podcasting in Education. Before this class I had heard of Blogs but never knew I was interacting with them every day. I use to read quotes online and the sites that I read them from were actually blogs now that I look back. So here I was thinking I knew what they were when in reality they were right under my nose and I hadn't the slightest idea. However, after taking this class, I truly understand the purpose of blogs and how they are made. We created our own blog for the semester and I must say I am enjoying writing my thoughts and feelings down which I have never done before. I like the idea of free writes like poems and such rather than all informational things, but everyone has their own purpose of a blog. After watching the video Blogs in plain english, it became very clear how important these blogs are. It gives everyone an audience and a purpose to write. For examples, a mother could have a blog about the life of Motherhood. Sharing stories of her children, helpful hints about potty training, juggling life, and still having time to have free for yourself.  Blogs allow anyone to become an author on their own and it allows for interactive learning through comments between readers and author. Here is a project that I created during the semester about Blogs using a site called SMORE.

We also learned about Podcasting. Podcasting combines the freedom of blogging with digital audio technology to create an almost endless supply of content.  Podcasting is free and allows internet users to pull audio files off of the podcasting website to listen on their personal media players or computers. MM3 learning on WizIQ

Moodle MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) is taking place and it was part of the course to attend at least one of the sessions this month. I attended a session on Monday February 17, 2014 since there was a holiday and I was not at work. First thing, is it is hard to attend the meeting times that they are presenting them sometimes. They are during the workday so the ones that I really would have been interested in seeing, I was not able to see. I was going to try to see the one this past Saturday but I was moving out of my place so unfortunately the times conflicted and I could not make it. In return, I made it to a session this morning to make up for the one class I missed. The class was a 9 AM and was on Quizzes on Moodle with Wiris presented by Ramon Eixarch. It was cool to see how you can create quizzes and tools online for students to interact with. It had a lot of interesting things on it but I felt that the lesson was geared towards older grades mainly. I actually asked him during the conference is this is useful to Elementary Teachers and he basically replied that it was not geared for that level yet but they will try to keep that in mind as they change things later on. I also felt that it was very hard to understand him at certain points. He used screen sharing that was interesting to see what he was showing us but like i said it was out of our elementary level originally so I almost felt left out even though I was completely involved with the presentation. If this was modified and was able to be used for the Elementary level, it truly had some great qualities. Wiris was the program that was used and it is free. It integrates with Moodle and allow the teachers to edit the formulas and problems. The active quizzes helps students self evaluate. They can be asked True/False Questions, Multiple Choice, Matching, Short Answers, as well as Essay formations. When students get the correct answers, there is a small green check mark that appears to allow the student to know that the answer is correct! 

Overall, the session was informative. Even though it wasn't necessarily geared towards me, it was still interesting to see. I learned new things and I will be interested to see if later on down the road there are other programs like this but for the Primary grades.

The beginning of the rest of my life

As the semester comes to an end, things are overwhelming. Everybody is stressed out and things are busy. Between working full-time and part-time, also tutoring and babysitting, making time for family and friends becomes tough. I was fortunate enough this past weekend to be able to go away with my boyfriend to Florida for the weekend. He traveled for his job and they paid for me to go visit him for a few days, all expenses paid! I was overwhelmed and excited and was in desperate need of a break. I boarded the plane, I traveled the 1,200 mile flight and landed in Orlando, Florida shortly after. I spent time with family I haven't seen in a while and enjoyed catching up with everyone. I spent the day with my Aunt and enjoyed our talks, until she drove me to the hotel to meet up with my boyfriend. That felt like it was the longest ride ever! Don't get me wrong, I have not been by my boyfriend's side every moment of our relationship. He has traveled for the firehouse and I have house sat or stayed with friends from time to time, where we were not together. But the idea of not being able to see him for two weeks was tough. I was bothered by not waking up and seeing his face every morning. It became apparent to me that this relationship was much more than any other one in the past. Pulling up into the hotel, I felt my heart beat faster as I looked around for his car, quickly forgetting he had a rental which I had no idea what it looked like. The moment of uncertainty quickly changed, when I saw him walking towards me. The smile immediately rose on my face and I hugged him like it was forever since I have seen him. The feeling of love that I felt in his arms, made me fall in love with him all over again. We enjoyed the few days together, checking out the Kennedy Space Center, swimming in the pool and just enjoying our quality time together as a couple. The time together was beyond wonderful and I knew that this is the man I want to spend the rest of my life with. He has been by my side through hard times and good. He was there for my nephews arrival everyday with my and my family in the hospital. He always goes above and beyond to help not only me but my family as well. He has totally made my life better and I could not be more thankful for everything he has done. That mini break from life gave me the moment to stop and appreciate all the little things in life. I enjoyed relaxing in his arms and just being young again and not stressing over everything life throws at you. When time gets hard, he is always there to make me better and I couldn't be more thankful. This may be the end of the semester but I truly feel that these last few months are the best months I have experienced and I have Fernando to thank for that.  He truly is a great guy and the man of my dreams. I can't wait to see the rest of the ride that there is in store for him and I as I believe this is just the beginning of a beautiful future.

Good things come to those who wait

This week has been a very eventful one so far. My boyfriend and I have been house hunting for about 5 months now and we did end up finding a house that we liked but it needed a lot of work. After finding a house that we both liked, we started the buying process on a short sale house. Unfortunately, there is nothing short during a short sale! After a month or so into the process, it became apparent that there were more issues than we had anticipated. due to the unexpected outcome we had to pull out of the deal. It was a hard day for both of us and I know that the boyfriend felt like it was a failing moment and we were hesitant to jump back into the search. After a few weeks, we decided to try again with the house hunting. To our surprise, we found a house that was on more property and was move in ready condition, and was NOT a SHORT SALE!! We were so excited that we immediately called our realtor and checked it out. After looking at it and discussing the difference in price, I am proud to say that we have placed an offer on the house and they accepted! We are now in the process of the home inspection being completed and if all goes well, we will be homeowners! It is so exciting and overwhelming all in the same moment.  A day after we found out about the house, my boyfriend received a call from his job asking him to travel for a few weeks. My happiness immediately turned into anxiety since he is a major part in the house situation. I felt my hands get sweaty and my heart drop  in anticipation of how long he would have to be away. To my surprise, his company will be sending him to Florida and will be doing a few days before he returns for the Easter holiday. Then he would be flying back out for 2 weeks. Sad to think I wouldn't see him for two weeks, I was still supportive and understood that his job needs him to go. I did my research on the house information and began to set up appointments and meetings with people for the house that need to be taken care of while he is gone to keep the process moving. After talking with his boss at his job, he came to me with some extra exciting news. Not only might we be home buyers in a few short months, but his company also felt bad for springing this travel on him in such short notice, that they are flying ME to Florida for a weekend to spend time with him!! I was so overwhelmed with excitement and joy that I could hardly speak!! I have been in need of a vacation from everything going on in my life and it seemed that there were was disappointing news one after the other for a while. To hear all these great and positive things happening and they are all happening with the love of my life, is more than overwhelming! It became apparent to me that hard work and perseverance definitely pays off and that good things do come to those who wait. I am looking forward to my weekend get away in beautiful Florida and then preparing for hopefully my last move for years to come into OUR BRAND NEW HOME!!

And then a hero comes along ♪ ♫♩

While subbing in a fourth grade class today, I was really having a hard time getting the students to cooperate with me at first. They were very chatty and had a hard time settling in. They ignored me when I was speaking to them and They were rude when speaking to me in general. It seemed to me that it was going to be one of those days where I was leaving with a headache and really doubting if this is truly what I am working so hard towards. I decided I wanted to take a different approach and really try to connect with the students. After I grasped their attention, I asked them to think about how they would have felt if I walked into the room and ignored everything they said. I explained that if they needed the bathroom or wanted a drink, no matter how many times they asked me I would just make a face and continue talking to my neighbor and ignore their  requests.  This caused many students to look at me in shock. They did not seem to understand why I was talking to them in this manner and why I seemed so upset with them all of a sudden. I explained that I have been speaking the same way and at the same tone since they all arrived in the room. Nothing I have done has changed except for the fact that I flipped the position of behaving like the teacher in the room to acting and behaving like a student in the classroom that day. I explained how their behavior and disrespect for me as a guest in the classroom made me upset and disappointed. I explained how I asked them to complete a task and the responses and behavior they displayed at the time was unpleasant and really hurt my feelings. I wasn't planning on coming into a class to feel like I was not even in the room and based on their behavior that was exactly how I felt. At this point, students were so quiet you could hear a pin drop. I explained that I want to get the work completed and I want to have a fun filled day, but if they choose not to treat me with respect, then our day will not be fun together. Feelings would be hurt and people should never have to feel uncomfortable at school or anywhere for that matter because of how other people around them behave or act. I explained to them that these kinds of behaviors could be confused with bully behaviors. Just because they were not calling me names and physical hurting me, did not mean that they weren't effecting the way I was feeling inside. I explained how our lesson today was a poem about class bully's. We continued on with the poem and we took turns reading and explaining what they poem was about. We discussed how the bully can be a boy or a girl, young or old. We talked about what you should do if you are being bullied or know of others who are being bullied. After about 30 minutes of conversations , the students who were very reluctant to listen to me in the beginning of the day, seemed to turn a new leaf. The class went smooth the rest of the day. The students all worked well with one another and they all seemed to get along. I had a student walk up to me at the end of the day and hand me a picture saying "Ms. L is my favorite sub ever. She is my hero". I asked the young lady what made her feel I was her hero, and she stated that if it wasn't for the way i spoke to the class earlier, she would have never been noticed by some of her classmates. She explained how she has asked to join their groups in the past and she was never expected because she wasn't cool like they were. After my conversation with them, she said she decided to ask if she could sit with them at lunch and they actually let her. The look on her face made my heart melt and I knew that at this point I have done my job not only as a teacher but as a mentor. I truly made a difference in at least one students life and that was the greatest feeling in the world. What i thought was going to be the worst day in my life turned out to be the best life experience I would ever encounter.  Here is hoping that all this hard work will land me a place to touch more souls and hopefully giving people a different view of how they treat others.

Round and round I go and when I stop nobody knows....

This is my Slice of Life poem for  April 1st. We were talking about poems since April is national poetry month. On that note, I wrote once again about how things are in my life. I enjoy writing poetry from time to time but lately I feel like I'm having a hard time thinking of things that are very happy and cheerful like I normally do.  It has been a very stressful semester for me personally and it seemed that the stress has totally taken me for a ride and I do not like that feeling. I am almost on autopilot and the thought of going off of a schedule is scary because I feel that everything else around me will fall apart. A vacation is definitely needed for me to get away and enjoy time without having to think for a change of due dates and assignments. This poem reflects how I have been feeling lately and I chose to write it in a circle because I feel that is how I have been traveling recently. I'm always on the go and always at a fast pace yet there is a feeling of no end to things lately. Once I think I have seen the end of the race, I begin to realize that the end was just another marker in my race of life saying that I have a few more miles to go to the finish line. I keep pushing ahead but definitely am getting tired from the hike up hill.

Balancing life everyday

So this week #SOL14 is about a balancing act between work and home. As I read this topic, I looked around my house to see nothing but chaos.... laundry needs to be done, dishes in the sink, room to be cleaned, homework to be completed, Shopping that needs to be done, a boyfriend who wants to spend time with me, a mother who wants to watch our favorite shows together, and the list goes on. Everyday, the roles of my life vary moment to moment. Daughter. Sister. Girlfriend. Teacher. Tutor. Godmother. Aunt. Babysitter. Friend. Cook. Cleaner. etc. All these labels I am very proud to call me but as much as I love them, I feel that doing all of them within 24 hours sometimes is too much to bear. Everyday I try and balance everything in my life but yet as organized as I am, I continue to feel like I'm drowning in an overload of everyday things. Here is a poem to explain my thoughts:

I talk about it, I groan, I yell, I pout, 
I sometimes even cry when I feel there is no way out. 
The world seems to get small and there is no where to run
I find myself cornered between tasks which are no fun.
I take a deep breath and hold my head high,
It's only another day of life passing me by. 
I gather my thoughts and put my best efforts in 
I say to myself let the fun begin.
I shuffle the schedule to make it all work, 
I clean, cook and tutor, when I would rather read a book.
My day gets dark, and Im ready for bed, 
yet I'm not quite done with everything in my head.
I check email and blogs, make sure assignments are up to date, 
I write lessons and plan tasks  even though it is late.
the clock turns to 10 and its time to call it quits,
my eyes begin to water and fill with some mist.
I'm tired and feel bad for there limited time with you 
Tomorrow is another day he says just know no matter what I love you too. 

At the end of the day, even though times are stressful and life seems hard, the love I have at home makes it all worth while. So when life seems unbalanced and you feel there is no way you can make it work just know that there is always a way to make the glass half full and to make tomorrow start with a smile.

quote of the day

I am a huge fan of sayings and quotes. I enjoy doodling pictures from time to time and I love making crafts and writing poems. I love to listen to song lyrics and relate them into my life because every song has a story. This week for #SOL, we need to think about our personal note that comes before our daily inspiration. I feel that inspiration happens everyday in life whether you look for it or not. I also feel that it is important to reflect on your day that you had every night before you go to sleep so you can see how you can change it tomorrow to make your next day even better. Some days are easier than others and some days don't always turn out better the next day. But either way you look at it, you are waking up the next day and enjoying the sun shining from the sky.

One picture quote that I found and look at everyday is this one:

I am very thankful for everyone and everything that I have in my life which makes me happy with my life as a whole.  I spent time with my sister and nephew the other day, just hanging out going shopping, etc.  My sister is one of my best friends and my nephew is only 8 months old and he is my world. The thought of that little boy can put a smile on my face any day. We went to lunch and he was smiling at people sitting at the tables next to us. We heard a few older folks chatting about how cute he was and how good he was behaving. My sister heard this and she was one proud Mommy! She was so happy and thankful for her son that he was so well behaved. We continued our day as we went shopping to local stores and he was a great little boy all day. As we all know, shopping hours on end with a child can be very tough sometimes, but this little one was amazing. He never really napped so he was overtired and even though he was tired he refused to miss a beat of what was happening around him. At the end of the day when he finally was getting restless, I began to see the stress and tiredness take over. When most people would get frustrated at this point my sister smiled and loved that little boy more more and more each moment of the day as time went past. I thought about her smiling face and it occurred to me that I just witnessed this quote in my life happen before my eyes. The baby was happy all day making everyone else smile and even my sister was smiling form time to time looking at her son but has no idea what being thankful means. He acted happy and showed the world what happiness looks like. At the end of the day even when he was not so happy and pleasant anymore, my sister still was smiling and was still happy even though sh was tired too. She is so in love with her child and so thankful to have him in her life, that even when times get hard and stressful, she truly is happy to have the life she has. Everyday may not be sun and daises and we all learn to dance in the rain to get through to the next day, but at the end of the day when the sun goes down and the moon is out and all the stress of the day goes to sleep, think to yourself, would I have changed anything about today? If your answer is no and you are still smiling even if it wasn't a perfect day, you know you are very thankful for the life you live and that is what makes it perfect for you. #SOL14

Excited or Exhausted.... Which are you?

The topic for the Slice of Life challenge this week is Excited or Exhausted? This question was tough to answer on many levels. When thinking about the slice of life challenge I am excited. I am actually enjoying myself writing once a week about topics such as this one. I feel that it is a moment I can take to myself to write how I feel or think for a moment in time. It truly makes me sit down and relax for a minute to write about how I feel. When I think about other things in my life, Excited doesn't always come to mind. I am exhausted with the amount of work I have to do lately. I am loaded down with assignments and with my full-time job in general. I work two part-time jobs on the side as well, so time is very valuable. I'm tired of running from place to place and not taking time for myself to breath. I forget what it is like to relax and enjoy moments with friends. I do not get to listen to music and  let my hair down that often anymore. I am enjoying this assignment because for once I can take a minute to breath and relax. I am excited for other things in life as well! My boyfriend and I are in the process of buying a house and things are going well so far. We are going to be signing our contract this week so I am overwhelmed with excitement and fear all at the same time. I am excited for the 5 weddings I have to attend this year. I am excited that my nephew is almost 8 months old and is starting to crawl. I am excited and blessed that my support team that I have, has never left my side even when I feel like I am all alone in this crazy world. I know that I have a team of people behind me that keep pushing up that hill when I feel like I'm falling down. So when I am asking myself if I'm excited or exhausted, I rather look at it as experienced. If it wasn't for those exhausting times that pushed me harder or the exciting times that made me glad for the exhausted times, I would not be where I am today. So thank you for allowing me to be experienced in this trip called life.

Slice of Life Challenge

During my Masters course, we were challenged to write a post for the Slice of Life challenge. I have never heard of this challenge before nor was I sure this is being done correctly. However, like everything else I do , this is just another learning experience where I can grow from. Enjoy my slice.

Twisting turning can not sleep
Wishing I didn't hear a peep.
Stressed, nervous, want to do well
Why does it continue to feel like hell.
I try my best everyday, yet it never seems enough,
I want to shout out real loud and call somebody's bluff
I will survive, I always do, no matter how the rain falls
I will not let this thundercloud put me up against walls.
So as I get my rain boots on and open my umbrella high
I keep my head up and never back down, as I shoot for the star in the sky.

SmartBoards are not your everyday whiteboards

        The other night, I went to a Professional Development for Smartboard Training for advanced learners. Basically, it taught us how to use the different functions that were available through Smartboard. I learned many fun tools and I actually was able to share them with a teacher I was subbing for the next day. I was helping her with ten-frame math for her 2nd graders and she absolutely LOVED IT!! I was so surprised that she enjoyed it so much as she is a young teacher herself but she never knew how to add pictures from the galleries and all that other fun stuff. It was a great feeling to know that my learning at MSMC is not just for my educational studies. I was able to help another colleague out with her lesson as well as explore the opportunities for myself. It was a great feeling to know that I was able to do it! Also reading and watching the videos from class, I found a few more things out that I would love to incorporate into my own classroom in the future. Since so many schools are technology based, I would like to implement the Extreme Collaboration add-on that is offered with Smartboard. This add-on allows the classroom iPads or cellphones to connect to the Smartboard. This kind of tool allows for the collaboration that is needed in classrooms but connects with the technology usage of the New Digital Native learning styles. Here are a few other SmartBoard tricks and tips that are helpful when you are using it for lessons in your classroom followed by some articles that might be useful to incorporate all the neat things Smartboards can do.

This week, since we learned about Smartboards, part of the requirement was to create a literacy activity for the Smartboard. Since I was subbing in a Special Education class for 1st graders, I was speaking to the teacher about creating lessons for my technology class. She said they always need activities for literacy things so if I can think of anything fun she would love to use it in her class since the students love learning from the Smartboard. I decided to create a lesson using Long /e/ and Short /e/. I included my own audio as well as a simple video from youtube and a sorting game and a writing template for them to practice writing the words as well.I feel that this type of activity s very repetitive which is good for Special Education students. It teaches the same concept of what I am trying to have them learn but also allows them to explore the same task many different ways. I would incorporate these kinds of lessons into my classroom for many different things. It is awesome for literacy but also for test review. I can set up a jeopardy game and have the students use it to review. I also like the idea that I can make this independent practice once I have gone over with them. I can use this same lesson idea for all the vowels and then allow students to review using these lessons on their own during free choice time. It keeps the students who need to move around busy but also learning at the same time.  I can't wait for the holiday break to be over so I can share my lesson with the students and see how well they do with it. Digital Learners... where do you stand??

Week 2, we were to create a digital learner based on the readings that we have read. Some of the articles that we read seemed to repeat the same basic information overall. It is obvious that our world continues to change and the way we grew up is no longer. We are considered the Digital Immigrants to the teenage generation. I have a sister who is 8 years younger than me and the difference in her technology skills compared to mine are tremendous! She is part of the digital native generation. They were born into the world where technology was normal and not a new trend or fad. My nephew who is 7 months old is fascinated with the remote controls at such a young age. Almost all of the toys I remember back in the day, are now remade with technology added in. An example would be with the game of Life. When we use to play when I was young, we used pretend dollars to pay for things because that was how life really was. Now in todays generation, the game of life is played with credit cards! Monopoly also plays with debit cards or visa cards. Children today think they can just swipe a card to get things not realizing that they need money in an account to be able to AFFORD to swipe that card! Times have changed and this causes our society to change as well. This week we created a digital learner picture to represent the net generation. This kind of picture was fun because it put things that I use or students use in their everyday lives. Until I saw everything laid out on paper, I never realized how much technology has really taken over our world. Every week, I learn more about technology and all the sites available for me to not only use for personal things but also to incorporate things into my classroom. I am hoping this class gets easier in time and I also can learn more from it as the semester continues. Till next time - Ms. L xoxo

Week One Assignment

Week one of our class was an interesting week. We had to meet on WizIQ for our class meeting. This was the first time I ever had to sign on to these types of things. The first time signing on I was overwhelmed. I was nervous and frustrated because it wasnt working properly and I was also getting nervous that maybe this class wasn't going to work out well for me after all. As the class continued, we learned how to create a googledoc PPT and we also had to share the links for our all about me presentations. It was awesome to get the feedback from individuals that are working just as hard as you are. All the hard work paid off for that assignment and I feel that it turned out wonderful. I learned how to use new and different types of programs and that was amazing. I can't wait to continue to broaden my horizons.

Welcome to the Digital World!

Hello everyone! So this is my first blog I have ever created and I am slowly learning how it all works.  I am taking a class on Literacy and Techonology and this is one of the tasks for the semester. Each week I will be adding a post about what I learned that week and my reactions and thoughts about the lessons.
